SIMONE'S STATEMENT:

“I create social conscious art that represents the struggles of African-Americans. Many of my images contain figures and symbolism, but their inclusion is merely a means to more vividly convey my message. Political, religious and social issues are the predominant subjects that command my attention.

It is in the graphite drawing that I start with the first rough sketch and, with the help of photographs, models and props completely develop the story and solve all the problems of drawing, composition and tone. I create a grid and transfer the image onto Masonite panel. Painting in oils, I develop the final image in stages until the work is complete.

My work is influenced greatly by artist-historian Alan Rohan Crite, who depicted in his works themes of ‘joy’ and ‘sorrow’ as they relate to daily living in the black community. He also turned his attention and talents toward sacred subjects and liturgical objects.”
